2011 Pokemon Black and White Base Set – History

Black & White is the name given to the first main expansion of the Black & White Series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It is the first Pokémon trading card game set based on the Pokémon games, Pokémon Black and White. The set has a total of 115 cards. The set introduces 69 new Pokémon to the TCG. It features Generation V Pokémon and the two-game Legendary Pokémon, Reshiram and Zekrom. Also, a hidden rare foil Pikachu.

Starting in this set, all non-Pokémon, non-energy cards now have the “Trainer” designation. Trainers are now divided into Item, Supporter, and Stadium.

The English expansion was for sale on April 25, 2011. The concept of starting from a new beginning is thrust into the Trading Card Game. This is why Black & White was entirely composed of Generation V Pokémon.

Black & White introduced Ability, replacing the long-standing Poké-Powers and Poké-Bodies. Abilities essentially merge the active and passive effects of Poké-Powers and Poké-Bodies into a single mechanic.

It also introduced Full Art cards. Full Art cards featured the artwork and Holofoil covered the entire card.

Several rule changes also came into effect with the release of Black & White. Item, Supporter, and Stadium cards revert to being a subclass of Trainer cards. They are once again playable during each player’s first turn.

The original rule said that players discard Supporter cards at the end of the player’s turn. The new way is the player must discard the card immediately after use. Neither of these changes affected gameplay.

The procedure in which you handle Knock Outs has been slightly altered. Previously, the player with the Knocked Out Pokémon discarded that Pokémon. Then, they would replace that Pokémon with one from their Bench. The player performing the Knock Out would proceed to take one Prize card.

The new rule is the player performing the Knock Out taking one Prize card. Then the player with the Knocked Out Pokémon replacing that Pokémon with one from their Bench. The change stops the player who got the Knock Out from picking a Prize card based on their opponent’s new Active Pokémon.

Black & White also introduced an updated card design, which included numerous changes. The card border of English prints is now yellow. The Stage area received a new graphic and is to the extreme top left. The Evolution circle is below and the “Evolves from” beside the Evolution circle. There are curvy strips between the Pokémon’s name and the HP. The Weakness and Resistance is at the bottom left with the Retreat below. The Pokédex entry was present on all Pokémon and is to the bottom right, inside of a frame. The copyright information is on the extreme bottom left. The illustrator’s name, card number, and set symbol are on the right. The Cosmos Holofoil is now a horizontal-striped pattern, named Tinsel Holofoil.
